Show Notes Transcript

We waste so much time and energy worrying about making the ‘wrong decision.’

This episode is meant to remind you that what’s for you will not pass you. You can’t fuck up, pass up, or ruin your chances with the things meant for you.

As a firm believer that the Universe always has our backs, allow me to be a shining example of how this is true:

Though we met in high school, there was a time when my now-fiance and I did not speak. We dated in college, broke up, and went our separate ways, but I always knew he was ‘the one.’

After briefly reconnecting years later (when I was living with a different then-boyfriend), we went our separate ways again due to the circumstances, and I didn’t think much of it.

It was when we reconnected for a third time (I was single by this time) we began dating again and are now engaged and planning our wedding next year.

The point of all of this? The Universe tried multiple times to get us to reconnect, leading me straight to the man I am now going to marry SEVERAL times before we finally decided to rekindle things.

Another example: when it was time for my business to start growing, my workload with social media management became overwhelming. The first time this happened, I felt I wasn’t ready and let all my clients slowly slip away.

But the Universe has my back and knows what’s right for me: a year or so later, I was presented with the same challenge again, only this time, instead of repeating the cycle, I leveled up and proceeded to hire additional help, increasing my capacity to take on more work, and therefore growing my business.

The Universe will keep bringing you the same lesson and course-correct until you’ve learned and found the things that are for you. Why? Because you can’t fuck up, pass up, or ruin your chances with the things meant for you.

[00:00:59] Hello, my loves. Today I want to talk about how we waste so much time and energy worrying about making the wrong decisions in our lives when we literally can't fuck it up no matter what we do. And there's something, or maybe there was something in the past, or you're worrying about right now...

[00:01:21] When you know what you want to do but are worried that you're making the wrong choice. And what I want to say to you is that you can't fuck it up. You literally can't fuck it up. No matter what you do, the universe has got you. You can't fuck up what's meant for you. You just can't. The universe will always course correct.

[00:01:41] Even if you make the "wrong decision," you will ultimately get to where you wanna be. Your path might look different. And I have many examples of this happening in my life, and I want to share a couple with you today. So do you want the relationship one first or the business one first?

[00:02:03] Let's go with relationship first since I always talk about business. So, I am currently engaged to Brendan, my fiancé. And we initially started dating; we met in high school, the first year of college, freshman year of college, and we dated for about two years. And then we broke up.

[00:02:23] I'm not going to really get into the details of why because I don't remember why, but it's also just not important. But we went our separate ways, right? I think it was that I knew, I always knew, that he was the one, and that fucking scared me. Hashtag child of divorce trauma.

[00:02:42] And so, at the first sign that maybe things weren't going to be perfect, my brain couldn't handle that, and I just ran away. So anyway, we go our separate ways. I did not talk to this man for almost five years. I didn't see him after that. We were not still in contact; we hadn't talked for almost five years.

[00:03:10] We ended up working at the same place, the same office in Boston, and it's a big office building, we were in completely different departments, so I didn't see him daily. Still, one day we ran into each other in the elevators. It was a classic Hallmark movie moment; I was leaving the elevator, he was coming into the elevator, we ran into each other, and had a little like, oh my gosh, hi, chit-chat moment, whatever.

[00:03:41] But again, just moving on. I was dating someone and living with my boyfriend at the time. So, it wasn't even remotely like, 'Oh, we're going to rekindle this thing.' It was just like, no, we ran into each other. And then, a few months after, I got a message from him in our internal work communication system.

[00:04:03] He asked if I wanted to get a drink after work very randomly. At the time, I was no longer dating that person who I was dating. And so I was like, sure. And it turns out that was his last day at work. He had put in his two weeks; he was moving to another company. And essentially, he told me later that he was planning to tell me he still had feelings for me that day.

[00:04:28] But before he had the chance to do that, I told him I was also planning on quitting and moving to North Carolina to start my own fitness coaching business. And so he, he didn't. He didn't tell me he still had feelings for me because he was like, 'All right, well, she's moving to North Carolina, we're not gonna, this isn't gonna happen, I guess.'

[00:04:48] Again, we just moved on, lived our lives, and didn't really talk to each other for months. And then, in July 2019, I lived in North Carolina. Still, I went back home to visit some of my family for like 4th of July weekend, and he just happened to see, I think, from Instagram that I was back in our hometown. He was also in our hometown, so he just literally slid into my DMs and was like, 'Hey, do you want to like to meet up and do something' and so we met back that day.

[00:05:23] We still didn't get back together, but we talked again, texting for a few months after that. And then, eventually, I went back up that November for Thanksgiving, and that's when we started dating again. We legit went on a date. And it was a whole thing, but looking back, I'm like, 'wow, there were so many times we could have gotten back together.

[00:05:49] The universe reconnected us in so many different ways.' And I couldn't have known that we would get back together. For those five years that we were broken up, I was off living my life happily. I wasn't; I had no expectation of ever seeing him again. And yet, here we are.

[00:06:10] You know what I mean? And so, no matter what you do, what's meant for you will return to you. And the universe is always going to course correct. So at, you know, 19 years old, when I was in a relationship with the person who I meant to be with, but then I got scared, and I decided to leave. The universe knew the right timing for us to get back together, you know what I mean? And it's like, the universe has got you. You, you can't fuck it up. Because I could have spent those five years looking back on that and being like, 'Wow, I really fucked that up.' But it didn't matter because we were still going to be together in the end, and that time apart, we've, we've talked about it, and we both are grateful for that, in a way, because yeah, it sucks that we lost five years that we potentially could have spent together. Still, we also had the opportunity to explore other relationships during that time, which allowed us to be now so certain that we wanted to be together.

[00:07:10] If we had just been dating since we were 18 years old, we might have felt like maybe there was something else out there. Maybe the grass is greener, but now we know that the grass isn't greener. And so we can be more solid in our relationship now because of it, and it's just like, everything works out perfectly.

[00:07:30] So, at the moment, you might be scared that you're making the wrong decision, but the universe will course correct. There's no such... we're always afraid that we'll miss our opportunity, that if we say no to something right now, the opportunity will never come back around, but I'm telling you it is.

[00:07:45] And I will give you another example, and this is the business example. So, a couple of years ago. Gosh, when even was this? It was 2020? Maybe 2021. When I initially started offering social media management in my business, it was in 2021, in the spring of 2021, it took off very quickly. Without me even doing a lot of marketing, really any marketing at all, I started getting all of these clients, whether from Fiverr or referrals or wherever. I don't even remember where they came from, but within a few months of starting to offer social media management, I had more clients than I could handle. I was so overwhelmed, and I knew that I needed help to manage that workload.

[00:08:33] I knew I needed to hire people and delegate some things, and I did for a while. I had two people helping me out, but it was really not... It was a very stressful time because I didn't know how to delegate effectively, so I was still taking on just so much of that workload, and it was very overwhelming, so I let all of my clients fall away. They all kind of gradually, at different times, no longer needed social media management for whatever reasons, and rather than trying to get any more clients, I just was kind of like, 'okay, this will take some stress off my plate, and I'll just focus on coaching again.'

[00:09:18] I let the social media side of my business die for a hot sec. Because, again, I was overwhelmed and scared that I would fuck it up. And I wasn't 100% sure that I really wanted that to be the direction my business went in. Cause I always imagined that I would be a coach, not the owner of a social media marketing agency.

[00:09:40] Right. And so, I got scared, and I got overwhelmed, and I got stressed and burnt out, and I stopped doing social media management for a hot sec. And then, a year later, I was back in the same exact spot. So, my social media management had picked back up. That was when my Fiverr really started to pick up, and I was just getting more orders than I could keep up with, and it was just like, 'Man, the universe really wants me to go in this direction' because it's been the easiest part of my business to grow.

[00:10:16] I have barely ever marketed my social media management services. I really never have. All of my clients have either come from Fiverr or a referral, or some of them were through an agency I was working with. I was able to get social media management clients and projects so effortlessly that it was ridiculous compared to the amount of work I would put into market my coaching services just to get one or two clients.

[00:10:43] And so I was just like, 'I feel like the universe is really telling me that this is the direction for me to go in, and I can either run from it again, or I can lean into it this time, and despite the fact that it's overwhelming and scary and I never imagined myself as the owner of a social media marketing agency, and I don't really know what I'm doing, and I don't know how to lead a team and manage people and delegate effectively, I can choose to figure it out, and I can choose to keep letting my business grow in the way that it naturally is apparently wanting to grow.' And so I did that, and I made a different decision that time, and I talked to mentors. One of my clients who's actually a leadership coach who was gracious enough to help me figure out how the heck to delegate things and she helped me work through a lot of my fear and overwhelm around all of this, and now I'm really getting to a place where it's like this thing is turning into a full-blown; it is already a full-blown agency, but it's still growing very rapidly, and I know I'm going to need to continue to expand my team very soon.

[00:11:58] And I'm just excited for where it's going to go, but when I look back on it and what my actual goals are, which is to work a whole lot less in my business and not have to be so hands-on and so in it in all of the day to day work and being able to have more freedom with my time. This is really the way that I'm going to do that.

[00:12:22] And the way that I'm going to be able to do that a lot easier than if I was focused on coaching because, as a coach, I would have to be on client calls all the time and responding to messages from my clients and really like actively marketing my business on social media if I want to get more clients and sometimes people to work with coaches for years. Still, usually, those contracts are like three to six months, and whereas social media management, I've been working with some clients now for years. And so really, looking back, I'm like, 'this is what I was meant to do, even if I never imagined it,' even though I never pictured myself here. I was set on a coaching business for so long because I thought that's what I wanted; all I've been saying for years now is that I want time freedom; I want more freedom with my time. And the universe has been over here, like, 'yeah, that's what I'm trying to give you, and this is the way,' but I just didn't; I wasn't listening because it freaked me out, and I got scared, and I didn't think that's what I wanted, but the universe course corrected. If I had made that same decision again when I was starting to get overwhelmed with my social media management work, I would have let my clients fall away and put my Fiverr on pause.

[00:13:40] At some point, I would have gotten back to that same place, and I would have been faced with the same opportunity to either run away from that or lean into it. The universe will always course correct. You can't fuck up what's meant for you. And there are certain things that we are all meant to do in our lifetime.

[00:13:58] Or if there's something that you really want, there might be one way to get there that just feels natural and effortless to you, even though it fucking scares you. And even though you may never have imagined that that's what you wanted, it is the way to get to that end goal that you have. And the universe will always give us those opportunities, but we still have the free will to say either yes or no when those opportunities arise.

[00:14:27] But we also don't have to spend months ruminating on that decision because that's just going to keep you stuck. The best thing you can do for yourself is to make a decision one way or the other, knowing that you can't fuck it up. There's no such thing as the wrong decision. Two different potential paths will ultimately get you to the same place.

[00:14:47] So you can trust yourself and follow the one that feels like the right decision for you right now. And I don't look back at 2021 Lindsay, who decided, who was scared and let all of her social media clients fall away. I don't look back and think, 'Oh, I made the wrong decision.' I was not ready to lead a social media marketing agency.

[00:15:12] I wasn't ready. So even though the universe was showing me this opportunity, I didn't feel ready for it, or I didn't; I didn't want to lean into it at that point. And so yes, I could have, and my business would have grown quicker, but ultimately, we still got here.

[00:15:30] There was a lot that I learned in that year between getting started as a social media manager, building out my agency, hiring a team, and starting to delegate that workload. And time and time again, I was consistently shown that this is the direction my business wants to go in. This is the direction that's always been effortless for me.

[00:15:53] The universe will keep showing you those signs of what's meant for you, and then when you're ready, you can either say yes or no to whatever that opportunity is. But it will return even if you say no right now to something meant for you.

[00:16:09] The opportunity will present itself again, whether it's the same exact opportunity or if it's in a different way or something else, but you can't fuck it up, is my point. You cannot fuck it up. If something is meant for you, it will come back to you. And so don't keep yourself stuck in this limbo of 'Oh my gosh, I don't know what to do. I don't want to make the wrong decision.'

[00:16:32] Just make a decision, and stick to it, and see what happens, and see where you're led, and trust that you are always on the right path, that you are always exactly where you're meant to be, that even if you make the “wrong decision,” there's nothing irreversible.

[00:16:47] There's nothing permanent, and you'll learn so much along the way. So you are safe to experiment, you're safe to follow your heart, you're safe to do what feels right for you right now without worrying that you've missed your chance or that you've made some life-altering wrong move.

[00:17:06] There are very few irreversible decisions. There are very few things that you're not going to be able to go back to, that you're not going to change your mind, that you're not going to do it differently in the future. So, you can trust yourself and whatever it is that you've been going back and forth on forever; if you're listening to this right now, this is your sign to make a fucking decision.

[00:17:31] And that's your homework for today. By the end of today, make a decision, commit to it, and see what happens. And then, tell me. Send me a DM. We can put a question box on this episode if you're listening on Spotify. What did you decide? What was your decision? What's the thing that you're going to do? Ah, man.

[00:17:49] I've been wanting to talk about that topic for a while because it's just something that I've noticed over and over again in my own life, and I'm sure you can even think of examples in your own life where this has happened to you, and take it as a sign. The universe has your back. The universe will always course correct, even if you "fuck it up."

[00:18:09] So, just decide. Do it. I love you. I am here for you always. Thank you for listening, and I will talk to you in the next episode.
